It’s an exciting time to take a stroll down Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, FL.  It’s baseball season, football season, and mural season all wrapped up in one.

Mural season?  This year St. Petersburg is hosting two new festivals dedicated to local art and murals.  These are the SHINE festival, from September 1st through September 12th, 2015, and SPF15, from September 10th through September 27th, 2015.

Many of the SHINE murals are located within the EDGE district of St. Petersburg, in the neighborhood of Tropicana Field and Ferg’s Sports Bar and Grill, famed gathering spots of Tampa Bay Ray’s Fans.  The Tampa Bay Ray’s tunnel, delivering fans from the bar to the baseball field and vice versa, is now being painted by Ya La’Ford with a Ray’s theme as part of the SHINE mural festival.

Given the close proximity of many of St. Petersburg’s murals to Tropicana Field, it isn’t unusual for local murals to have a baseball theme, as illustrated by Olive Ferrell’s and Ya La’Ford’s murals above.  This list of baseball-themed murals also includes murals within Tropicana field by Sebastian Coolidge and Andrew Spear.

But there’s more to St. Pete than just baseball, as Sebastian Coolidge’s Central Avenue murals show:

The Rays weren’t playing last evening, when I visited the EDGE district (their next home game is September 11, 2015 vs. the Red Sox.  Instead of Rays fans, Ferg’s was taken over by University of Michigan alumni there to watch their first football game of the season.
