Celebrating the Florida Stone Crab

Stone Crab Season is here! The opening of stone crab season (October 15th through May 15th) is accompanied by multiple outdoor festivals throughout Florida, and with the Florida stone crab there is much to celebrate.  Often compared to lobster, and sold at similarly steep prices, stone crab claws are a local delicacy.  Not only are they delicious, but they are also sustainable; half of their meat is in their claws, allowing the rest of the crab to be spared.

In my hometown, the festivities begin with the Old Bay Cafe’s Craft Beer and Crab festival in Dunedin, FL.  Each year, white tents and food and beverage trucks inundate Edgewater Park for a weekend of beer, crabs, and music.

The Old Bay Café’s Seafood tent is the flagship tent, serving stone crab claws warm with butter, or cold with mustard sauce, in multiple sizes.  From tent to table:

This year’s entertainment included the Wendy Barmore and Jeriko Turnpike bands, playing in the gazebo.  Wendy is one of my favorite local blues musicians, and Jeriko Turnpike is a popular local rock band.  Both come with their own following, and both did a great job entertaining everyone at this year’s Craft Beer and Crab Festival.

One of the things I love about this festival is its focus on local cuisine and music, providing an experience you just can’t get outside of Florida.
